Glare in the windshield of a car that is driving

Tips for Reducing Glare While Driving at Night

Glare from stoplights and other vehicles’ lights can be annoying. Not only is glare inconvenient, but it makes it more difficult to see when driving at night. Thankfully, there are ways to reduce windshield glare at night. Here are a few tips you should try.

Clean Your Windshield

If you are having issues with glare at night, it’s likely that your windshield just needs a good cleaning. Smudges, dirt, and bugs can reflect light and make seeing a little trickier. Give your car a car wash to clean most of the debris on the outside. Then, consider cleaning the exterior glass some more with a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Be sure to lift the windshield wipers to get the glass underneath.

Even though the inside doesn’t get as dirty as the outside, you will also need to clean the interior glass. Like with the exterior, use a glass cleaner and microfiber towel to clean your windshield in sections. While you’re at it, consider cleaning the rest of the windows on your car.

Adjust Your Mirrors

Sometimes, glare happens because your mirrors aren’t adjusted properly. For the driver side mirror, lean your head towards the left window and adjust so that the side of your vehicle is barely visible. For the right passenger mirror, do the same but lean your head over the center console. With your rearview mirror, your vehicle should have a nighttime mode to reduce the glare of headlights behind you. This may be a button or the simple flip of your mirror. Check your owner’s manual to learn what your vehicle offers.

Visit the Optometrist

Naturally, our eyes don’t perform as well as we age. If the above recommendations don’t seem to help, you may have a vision issue. If you haven’t had your eyes checked in at least two years, be sure to schedule an appointment with your optometrist. For drivers that wear glasses, consider investing in anti-glare lens.

In addition to the above, avoid looking directly at other vehicles’ headlights. Instead, focus on the right line or where the road meets the shoulder to stay centered within your lane. Also, don’t forget to help other drivers see by toggling off your high beams when passing or following another vehicle.
