Why You Should Change the Oil in Your Car

rn

Getting your oil changed is standard maintenance that benefits the health of your vehicle. However, not everyone knows when to get an oil change or why oil changes are so important. If you aren’t sure if you need an oil change, continue reading!

rn

[ READ MORE: Best Methods to Maintain your Vehicle ]

rn

How Often to Get an Oil Change

rnMechanic changing the oil of a carrn

The recommended time to get an oil change is every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Of course, this applies more to older models. Newer vehicles have been built better to go a longer time or distance before that oil change is required. This rule also applies solely to cars with conventional oil. Many vehicles now use synthetic oil, which was designed to last longer. With synthetic oil, you should get an oil change roughly every 5,000-7,000 miles or six months.

rn

Aren’t sure when you had your last oil change? Use the dipstick to check the color of your oil. Fresh oil is an amber color and gets darker as it collects grime. If your oil looks black or is getting close to black, you need a change right away!

rn

Also, make sure that you have enough oil circulating. Check how much oil you have by wiping your dipstick, inserting it again, and pulling it out. Wherever the oil ends on the dipstick is how much you have left. If you are low but don’t need a change yet, be sure to add some oil to last you until your oil change.

rn

Why Oil Changes are Important

rn

Some drivers may not realize the importance of getting an oil change and let their vehicle go for long period of time or distances without one. The purpose of oil is to circulate around the engine to absorb heat and lubricate the moving parts. With bad oil, your engine will overheat, and parts can grind. This can lead to major engine damage. Overall, if you want your car to last a long time, be sure to change your oil!

Recommended Car Wash Frequency

rn

Did you know that if you wait too long to get a car wash, the value of your vehicle will decrease? Most drivers in the U.S. don’t get a car wash very often, if at all. While car washes will keep your car looking clean, there are additional reasons that you should be washing your car. Let’s take a look at what experts recommend on how often you should get a car wash.

rn

[ READ MORE: Tips on How to Wash Your Car ]

rn

Why to Wash Your Car

rn

Rear angle of a red car going through an automatic car wash

rn

Car washes are great to get dirt and grime off your vehicle to keep it looking new. However, the frequency of when you should get a car wash depends on many factors, such as where you live, the type of weather in the area, where you store your vehicle, how often and far you drive, among others.

rn

Let’s start at where you live. Here in Florida, we live by the coast, see plenty of sun, and its typically rather hot. The salt from the ocean, through the water and air, will damage the paint and create rust if your car isn’t washed enough. Bugs, bird droppings, and tree sap will also leave long-term damage to the paint as these harden and stick. Unfortunately, heat speeds up the hardening process, making it more likely for paint to get damaged. Also, you will want to get a car wash more frequently if you drive often and leave your car parked outside.

rn

When to Get a Car Wash

rn

The general recommendation for most drivers is to get a car wash about every two weeks. However, as we mentioned earlier, you may have to wash it more often for different circumstances. It is a very affordable task and will leave your car looking new, even if you bought it used.

Tips for Purchasing a Pre-Owned Vehicle

rn

For many buyers, purchasing a pre-owned vehicle can be stressful. What if the car is on the verge of breaking down? Am I getting the best deal? Was the car in an accident? These questions, along with many others, often make shoppers wonder if a used car is right for them. While you should always take your time and consider your options, the buying process shouldn’t have to be stressful. Here are a few things on what you should look for when buying a used car.

rn

[ Browse our Used Car Inventory in Florida ]

rn

Inspect the Car Thoroughly

rn

As you shop for a used car, you should be aware of its condition. Is the vehicle missing paint? Are there large dents or deposits of rust? Is there paint discoloration or uneven panels that could indicate a prior accident? Inside and out, you should inspect the car thoroughly for signs of excessive wear and tear that isn’t expected of a car with the age and mileage it has.

rn

Ask for the Vehicle History Report

rn

This step is crucial if you are seriously considering buying a used car. A vehicle history report is an official document that details past ownership, title status, past accidents, mileage, and more. This report will give you a clearer picture of what the vehicle’s background is so you can more easily decide if it is reliable and being sold honestly.

rn

Give the Car a Test Drive

rn

Two happy car shoppers looking at the inside of a car

rn

If the car looks good for its age and has a good history report, then it is time to give the vehicle a test drive. While you are driving it, pay attention to any flaws that can indicate a potential problem. For example, are you hearing any weird noises? If you notice anything that can be wrong with the car, can the seller fix it before you buy it?

rn

In addition, you will want to research fair prices and trust the seller, especially if you are buying from a stranger. Here at OkCarz, we offer some of the best deals on used vehicles in Florida. Not only that, but we are fully transparent on a vehicle’s condition and past so you can put your full confidence in us. Notice something wrong on your test drive? Let us know and our service team will take a look. If you have any questions on any model, don’t hesitate to ask. For more tips like this, visit the OkCarz blog.

Warning Signs of Bad Brakes

rn

You probably already know that the brakes in your vehicle need to be periodically replaced. However, not every driver knows when they need to replace the brakes in their car. These are some common warning signs you should watch for if you are suspecting bad brakes.

rn

[ READ MORE: Essential Emergency Kit Items to Keep in your Car ]

rn

Screeching or Squealing When Braking

rn

When you apply the brakes, do you hear any weird noises? Does it sound like something is squealing, screeching, or scraping? If so, then chances are that your brake pads are nearly or completely gone. When this happens, metal rubs on metal since there is no pad left. If you continue to go without getting new brakes, then eventually you will be looking at a large repair bill to replace any warped rotors and damaged metal.

rn

Vibrating Steering Wheel or Brake Pedal

rn

Another major sign of bad brakes is abnormal vibrating in the steering wheel or the brake pedal. Your brake rotors could be warped and/or your brake pads are worn.

rn

Longer Stopping Time

rn

Mechanic replacing the brakes of a car lifted into the air

rn

As the purpose of your brakes is to slow you down and bring you to a complete stop, your brakes will no longer be doing its job when they are worn and need replacing. You may find yourself needing more time to slow down. Eventually, your car may not stop at all the longer you wait.

rn

No matter the symptoms you are noticing with your car, you should always take your vehicle in to get your brakes immediately. If you aren’t sure if your brakes are going bad, ask for a brake inspection and a mechanic will inspect your brakes for you.

As you have likely noticed from the list above, hybrids are dominating the market for drivers looking to minimize fuel intake. Of course, fully electric vehicles will top the list as electric motors do not provide any emissions. Since this list details fuel economy for vehicles powered by gasoline, we have decided to exclude pure electric vehicles.

As you review this list, you will find many patterns. For example, Toyota offers the highest number of fuel-efficient vehicles that ranked in the top 10, making this brand a great option. Honda offers two models, while Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet, and Lexus each ranked with one hybrid vehicle. Since city and highway mileage varies greatly, each vehicle was ranked by the EPA-estimated combined mpg. Finally, if you are looking for the most efficient hybrid vehicle made this year, you will want to consider the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq.
